AMA Supercross is American stadium dirt bike racing at its most intense. Riders on 450cc and 250cc bikes race on tight, man-made tracks built inside football and baseball stadiums. The courses are packed with big jumps, rhythm sections, and bumpy whoops. Fans love it because everything happens right in front of them: huge air, close passing, and a gate drop that sends a full field into the first turn at once. One small mistake can change a championship.
Supercross grew out of outdoor motocross. The 1972 Superbowl of Motocross at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum showed that a stadium crowd would turn out for dirt bike racing, and a full AMA championship followed in 1974. Since then the sport has built its own stars and rivalries, from Bob Hannah to Jeremy McGrath to Ricky Carmichael. It is now one of the most popular forms of motorcycle racing in the United States.
How it works
- Riders get timed practice sessions, and those times help set the heat race lineups.
- Heat races and a last chance qualifier (LCQ) decide who makes the main event.
- The main event is a single race for the night's biggest points, with a full field on the gate.
- Riders earn points based on finishing position, and the season champion is the rider with the most points at the end of the series.
Fan tips
- Arrive early. Practice and qualifying are worth watching to see how riders attack the track.
- Bring ear protection, especially for kids. Stadium noise from bikes and crowds adds up quickly.
- Pick a seat near a rhythm section or whoops. You can see riders choose different lines and speeds.
- Check the live schedule and results on this page before you go, and look at what pit access options your event offers.

FAQ
What is the difference between Supercross and Motocross?
Supercross is raced in stadiums on shorter, tighter, man-made tracks with large, closely spaced obstacles. Motocross is raced on longer outdoor tracks with more natural terrain and faster, flowing sections. Many riders compete in both, but each demands different skills.
What classes race in AMA Supercross?
The premier class is 450SX, with riders on 450cc four-stroke bikes. The 250SX class is the stepping stone for younger riders and is run on 250cc four-stroke bikes. Check the live schedule on this page for which classes race at each event.
Is Supercross a good first motorsport event for kids?
Yes, it can be. The action is easy to follow, you can see the whole track from your seat, and the nights move quickly. Bring hearing protection and plan for a long evening.
Who was the greatest Supercross rider of all time?
Fans argue about this a lot. Jeremy McGrath, nicknamed the King of Supercross, won seven premier class titles and is a common first answer. Ricky Carmichael, Bob Hannah, and others have strong cases too.
