The FIA World Endurance Championship is sports car racing's global tour, where teams race for hours instead of minutes. Cars from different classes share the track at once, so the fastest ones are constantly cutting through slower traffic. Drivers share each car, engineers juggle fuel and tires, and a race can swing on a single pit stop. The series also includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the most famous endurance race in the world.

The modern championship began in 2012, run by the FIA together with the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, the organizers of Le Mans. It revived the spirit of the old World Sportscar Championship, which ran from 1953 to 1992 and gave us the Group C era. Manufacturers come back to endurance racing because it rewards reliability, efficiency and smart strategy. Fans love the night stints, the sound, and the sense that the race is never over until the flag.

How it works

  • Races are timed, not set by lap count. The winner is the first car across the line after the clock runs out, having covered the most distance.
  • Each car is shared by a crew of drivers who swap during pit stops, so every driver in the lineup matters.
  • Several classes race together. Each class has its own winner, so you can follow a battle for class position even when the cars are far from the overall lead.
  • Pit stops decide a lot. Teams manage fuel, tires, driver changes and repairs, and a slow stop or a clever strategy call can swing the result.

Fan tips

  • Watch more than the overall leader. Some of the best fights happen between cars in the same class, deeper down the order.
  • Use live timing alongside the broadcast. It shows gaps, pit stops and class order, which makes strategy easier to follow in a long race.
  • At the track, bring ear protection, layers for cooler nights and a comfortable chair. Long races mean long days, so pace yourself.
  • Don't skip the night. Headlights, glowing brakes and fewer cars on track make the overnight hours some of the most atmospheric racing you'll see.

FAQ

How long are World Endurance Championship races?

Races are run to a fixed time rather than a set number of laps. Many rounds last several hours, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans runs a full day and night. Check the live schedule on this page for the current format.

Does the 24 Hours of Le Mans count toward the championship?

Yes. Le Mans has been part of the modern World Endurance Championship since the series started in 2012. It is the best-known race on the calendar and a huge draw for fans and manufacturers.

Why are different cars on track at the same time?

Multi-class racing is a core part of endurance racing. Faster and slower classes run together, and each class scores and wins separately. It adds traffic and strategy, and it gives more teams a real chance at a podium.

How is it different from IMSA?

IMSA is the main sports car series in North America, with its own calendar and championships, including the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The World Endurance Championship is a global series built around Le Mans. The two often feature similar types of cars, so many fans follow both.
